Nagaland yesterday celebrated 2nd Honey Bee Day under the theme ‘Save Bees, Save Life’ at Kohima. Chief Secretary Temjen Toy said, every household in Nagaland is a potential beekeeper. He urged the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) to take extra effort in promoting beekeeping in the state to produce more. He envisaged that Nagaland can be a honey destination if more people come forward to take beekeeping as a mission rather than supplementing the income of the farmers.
Mr. Toy also encouraged the bee farmers to work towards its mission adding that collective effort will make it possible. NBHM Chairman Ntsemo Ngullie said, bees play a vital role in the eco-system. He said, it is necessary to ensure their survival by finding sustainable solutions to factors that threaten their existence. So far Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission has trained 15,450 beekeepers from the state. Beekeeper awards for state-level, district-level and Best Beekeeping Committees were given on the occasion.
It may be mentioned that Nagaland Government has declared 5th of December as Nagaland Honey Bee Day. The day has been declared in order to create community awareness on the role of honeybees as a contributing factor in conservation of biodiversity as an agent of food chain and to promote and create a platform for beekeeping technology to farmers in the field as an important system of organic farming and sustainability by establishing a vibrant cottage industry in the State.
