50 Diwali revellers suffer eye injuries caused by firecrackers in Hyderabad

Eye injuries have seen a rise over the past few years despite widespread awareness programmes about crackers. Diwali turned into a huge ordeal for several persons in Hyderabad on Wednesday after they sustained eye-related injuries of various kinds while bursting crackers.

Several people reported to State-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital with eye injuries while some others also approached private eye care centres including L V Prasad Eye Institute for treatment. Of the 50 patients at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, 8 had been admitted to the inpatient wings of the hospital who had suffered grievous eye injuries and would have to undergo surgeries in the coming days, according to eye surgeons.

The remaining 42 patients who came to the hospital were treated in the outpatient department and were discharged on Wednesday night. Most of the patients received injuries while they were bursting crackers, while the others sustained injuries after being hit by sparkles emanating from crackers.
