62 people killed in Tanzania fuel tanker explosion

62 people killed in Tanzania fuel tanker explosion

At least 62 people were killed and 70 injured in a fuel tanker explosion on a road west of Tanzania’s economic capital Dar Es Salaam today. Police authorities said, the disaster took place near the town of Morogoro, when the fuel tanker exploded after overturning. The people were collecting oil from the leaking truck that overturned following the accident.

The dead were mainly drivers of the taxis and local residents that flocked to the scene for the fuel after the tanker crashed. Incidents of people being killed in explosions while stealing fuel from incapacitated tankers are common in East Africa.

Those who steal the fuel usually hope to be able to sell it cheaply to motorists. In 2013, a similarly deadly incident killed at least 29 people on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, as scores swarmed around the scene of an accident.
