Nine members died and one person was missing as a boat capsized in Mahanadi river in Odisha’s Kendrapara, official sources said. The incident took place when the mechanized boat carrying 10 persons capsized in the Mahanadi on Wednesday evening. The fire brigade personnel and members of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) were rushed to the spot for the rescue operation.
The victims– residents of Jagatsingpur’s Kujang area– were returning after a picnic at the Light House at Hukitola island of the Mahanadi river for the New Year. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of deceased and free treatment for the injured.
