Amritsar train tragedy: 61 dead, 72 injured

At least 61 people were killed and 72 injured when a crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching the burning of Ravana effigy was run over by a train near Amritsar last night. The accident happened near Joda Phatak area of Amritsar where a large number of people were watching the burning of Ravan effigy while standing along the railway tracks when the train crushed them.

The train was coming from Jalandhar to Amritsar. The victims reportedly could not hear the hooting of the train due to the exploding crackers. Witnesses said the dead included children. There were reportedly around 700 people at the accident spot. The train was reportedly travelling at a high speed. The gates of the unmanned crossing were reportedly closed.
