The former ISRO chief and space scientist U R Rao passed away at 02:30 am today. He was 85 years of old. He is the man behind India’s first satellite Aryabhatta. Few days back he was admitted to hospital with heart problem.
He was born in Adamaru village in Udupi, he was associated with India’s famous space programmers Satish Dhawan and Vikram Sarabhai.
He got Padma Vibhushan award in this year. After he received the award, he had joked, “I thought I would get this award posthumously.
He served as the ISRO chief between 1984 and 1994 and serving as the chairman of governing council of the physical research laboratory and the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Science and Technology at Thiruvananthapuram.
Narendra modi tweeted “Saddened by demise of renowned scientist, Professor UR Rao. His remarkable contribution to India’s space programme will never be forgotten”.
