Birthday Special: Nutan who ruled the industry for 4 decades

Today is the birthday of famous celebrity Nutan Bahl. Actress Nutan was born into a Marathi family on 4 June 1936 in Mumbai, to director/poet Kumarsen Samarth and his actor wife Shobhana Samarth. Her younger sister Tanuja, Kajol’s mother, is also an actor. When she was a child her parents separated.

In her 40-year career, Nutan played a variety of characters. She has worked with every actor of her time. She was awarded the Filmfare Award 6 times. Also in 1974, the Indian government honoured her with Padma Shri.

Nutan saw many ups and downs in her life. It is that her reel life did not match her real life. Nutan’s relationship with her mother had become very bad. There was no discussion between the mother and daughter for 20 years for a manuscript about manipulation of money.

Nutan was married to the naval lieutenant commander Rajneesh Behl on 11 October 1959. They have a son Mohnish. She kept her film career alive after her marriage and made many strong films.

Nutan started working in films at the age of 14 in Hamari Beti(1950) which was produced by her mother, Shobhana. In 1952 she was the winner of the Miss India pageant.

In 1959, the film ‘Sujata’ took Nutan’s career to the heights of the sky.

She was fond of music. In the film ‘Hamari Beti’ she sang the song ‘Tujhe Kaisa Dulha Bhaaye Re’

Nutan has worked in films like Bandini, Manzil, Milam, Saraswati Chandra, Basant, Main Tulsi Tere Aagan Ki, Sajan, and many more.

Soon Nutan was surrounded by cancer. Despite all the treatments, it did not cure, and by February 21, 1991, her cancer had spread to her lungs, and at the age of 54, she breathed her last.
