Chilkur priest carries Dalit man on shoulders into Hyderabad temple

Amid Vedic chants, the high priest of Lord Balaji Temple in Chilkur, CS Rangarajan carried a Dalit man on his shoulders into the inner sanctum of the 400-year-old Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, located on the banks of Musi River in Jiyaguda in Hyderabad. The priest then hugged him as part of the ancient ‘Muni Vahana Seva’ ritual.

The idea is to proclaim that all are equal before God and the this unique ceremony is named “Munivahana Seva”.

Priest Rangarajan then said, “This is the re-enactment of a 2,700-year old incident. It is being done… to propagate equality among all sections of the society.”
