EC announces Karnataka assembly poll schedule

Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat today announced the Karnataka state assembly election 2018 schedule.

The following are the important dates for the Karnataka Assembly Election –

Issue of notification 17 April, 2018
Last date of nomination 24 April, 2018
Date of scrutiny 25 April, 2018
Last date of withdrawal of candidates 27 April, 2018
Date of Polling 12 May, 2018
Counting of votes 15 May, 2018

The Chief Election Commissioner said the total number of electorate in the state are 4.96 crore.

He then said the total number of polling stations in Karnataka are 56,696. This is a 9% jump from previous assembly elections.

CEC then said that with immediate effect the model code of conduct will come into effect now that the poll dates are announced.

The Karnataka polls will be single phase. They are politically crucial for the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah and also the BJP as it is the only big state where the GoP is in power.

The 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly’s tenure expires on May 28.
