GHMC to encourage cloth & jute bags
The GHMC was planning to involve Self-Help Groups to encourage them to take up stitching of cloth and jute bags in place of plastic covers to curb the plastic menace.
The Additional Commissioner UCD and their team organized a meeting with the SHG Women, who are dealing with stitching of cloth and jute bags where GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy interacted with them and said the GHMC has banned below 50 microns plastic bags and other single use plastic materials in the twin cities. The idea was to involve women SHGs to take up the cloth and jute bags in place of plastic. One crore plastic bags were being used per day and instead this, cloth and jute bags are very much needed in large number for the citizens.
In this connection, the Commissioner said the GHMC UCD Wing has identified 68 Women SHGs to take up this project where the GHMC officials will impart training to the women that how to take up the stitching project. Later they will be provided loans through banks for taking up the project which will be helpful to them for their livelihood and also help the GHMC to curb plastic menace.
The Commissioner said the UCD wing was preparing an action plan for marketing of the cloth and jute bags and future course of action for better implementation of project, where the banks have also come forward to sanction loans for the purpose. The Commissioner thanked the managements of the Banks for the support.
Additional Commissioners Sruthi Ojha, Siktha Patnaik, Bhaskara Chary, Banks Managers from Ranga Reddy and Medchel District, Zonal Commissioners, UCD Project Managers and Women Members of SHG participated in the meeting.
