The Centre has launched a dedicated Asiatic Lion Conservation Project with a budgetary contribution of around 98 crore rupees to strengthen the conservation initiatives. Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change approved the project for financial years 2018-2019, 2019- 2020 and 2020-2021.
Speaking at a function in New Delhi, Minister of Environment, Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the project envisages scientific management in coordination with multi-sectoral agencies for disease control and veterinary care for overall conservation of Lion.
The Asiatic Lion, endemic to Gir landscape of Gujarat, is one of the 21 critically endangered species identified by the Ministry for taking up recovery programmes. The Gir National Park will get dedicated ambulances and veterinary hospitals to treat injured and sick lions as part of the conservation project.
