Indian short documentary bags Oscar award

Indian film producer Guneet Monga has made everyone proud back home as she has won an Oscar for her co-production Period. End of Sentence. Guneet Monga has won the Best Documentary Short Subject award at the Oscars 2019. The short film, set in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur, has been directed by Iranian American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi.

The docu-feature is set in a rural area just outside the Indian capital, where women fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation and lead a quiet revolution. The 26-minute film follows girls and women in Hapur in northern India and their experience with the installation of a pad machine in their village.

“I can’t believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar,” Zehtabchi said as she got up on the stage to accept the honour. Thrilled after the win, Monga tweeted: “We won! To every girl on this earth… know that you are a goddess.”
