Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin have been ruled out of the second Test against Australia in Perth. Rohit sustained an injury to his back while attempting to field the ball on the fifth day of the Adelaide Test. Ashwin, on the other hand, is struggling with an abdominal strain on his left side. Ashwin sent down 86.5 overs in Adelaide – the most he has bowled in a single Test.
This included a marathon 52.5 over-effort in the second innings. He bagged six wickets and conceded at less than two runs an over. Ashwin, 32, has been afflicted with abdominal and groin injury concerns in the recent past. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja has been included in the squad while all-rounder Hanuma Vihari replaces Rohit.
Fast bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav have retained their places in the squad. This is the second big injury blow for India ahead of a Test match on this tour after opener Prithvi Shaw was ruled out of the Adelaide Test due to an ankle injury he sustained during the warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI. Shaw continues to be out of the playing XI with Murali Vijay and KL Rahul holding on to their opening slots.
