Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress take number game to stage, parade 162 MLAs

The game of political one-upmanship continues in Maharashtra with NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena combine leaving no stone unturned to prove that the Devendra Fadnavis led BJP government is in a minority. Right from submitting a letter staking claim to form the government to parading their MLAs before the media, the parties have been unrelenting. This follows the surprise swearing-in ceremony of Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday morning, even as NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena claimed that they were ready to stake a claim.

In the last two days, hectic political activities, including shifting of MLAs from one hotel to another to prevent horse-trading while raising issues of legality of Governor’s decision, have taken centre stage. In an attempt to showcase their strength, the ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ of the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress paraded a total of 162 MLAs at Mumbai’s Grand Hyatt Hotel last evening. Earlier in the day, a delegation of senior leaders from all the three parties submitted a letter to Raj Bhavan, stating that their alliance should be invited to form the government after Devendra Fadnavis led BJP government fails the floor test.

On the other hand, unfazed by all the buzz, Mr. Fadnavis yesterday took charge as the state’s Chief Minister and as his first task, signed a cheque from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He also sanctioned another 5380 crore rupees from the Maharashtra Contingency Fund to provide relief to farmers affected by unseasonal rains. The Chief Minister also met World Bank officials to discuss the proposed ‘Climate Resilience Improvement and flood & drought Management Program.
