Forest Department personnel on Wednesday rescued a snake from the indoor unit of a split air-conditioner in the house of a government employee at Thengaithittu. The personnel said the rat snake had made the indoor unit of the AC its home for the last three months. According to sources, Ezhumalai, an employee of the Social Welfare Department, had switched on the split AC in his bedroom on Wednesday.
With faint sounds emanating from the cooling unit, he switched off the AC and decided to call a mechanic to get it serviced. When the mechanic opened the indoor unit, he found shed snakeskins in it. He took a close look at it with a torch and found that a snake in it. Ezhumalai immediately alerted the Forest Department.
A team rushed to the house and identified it as rat snake, which is not venomous. The two-foot long snake was pulled out and released near the department. An official said the snake could have crept into the air-conditioner through an opening left after connecting the duct to the outdoor unit.
