SIPCOT cited the people's agitation and pollution as the reason behind the cancellation of the land allotment.

CHENNAI: A day after Tamil Nadu government issued an order to shut down Sterlite copper unit permanently the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) cancelled the land allotted to m/s Vedanta Limited for the proposed expansion of Copper Smelter Plant (phase-2) in Tuticorin.

SIPCOT cited the people’s agitation and pollution as the reason behind the cancellation of the land allotment. The price collected for the land allotment will be refunded as per the norms of SIPCOT.

In an order issued Tuesday morning, the SIPCOT managing director K Srinivasan cited series of agitations and protests against the establishment of the plant atSIPCOT industrial complex, expressing concerns about the pollution caused by the existing plant of Vedanta Limited.
